Super Firetemp® Calcium Silicate Insulation Board
— Grades,Specs, and Availability

Super Firetemp is a calcium silicate insulation board manufactured by Johns Manville, meeting ASTM C656 Type II standards. It is an ongoing, actively manufactured product available through AWMCO with monthly restocking — making it the primary in-stock replacement for BNZ Marinite now that Marinite production has permanently ended. AWMCO stocks five Super Firetemp grades covering densities from 20 to 55 pcf and service temperatures up to 1800°F, available in full sheets and pre-cut 12” × 12” squares.

Super Firetemp Information

What is Super Firetemp?

Super Firetemp is a non-asbestos, non combustible structural calcium silicate insulation board manufactured by Johns Manville. It is a Type II calcium silicate product per ASTM C656 — the standard specification for calcium silicate thermal insulation used in industrial, commercial, and fire protection applications. Super Firetemp is machinable: it can be cut, drilled, and fabricated with standard woodworking tools. All grades are non asbestos, contain no mercury or lead, and produce a clean, non-contaminating surface.

What is Super Firetemp made of?

Super Firetemp is a calcium silicate board — a composite of calcium, silica, and reinforcing fibers, formed under heat and pressure into rigid, dimensionally stable boards. It contains no asbestos and no gypsum. The result is a board that maintains structural integrity and insulating performance at elevated temperatures, with consistent density and thermal properties across grades.

What Is the ASTM C656 Standard?

ASTM C656 is the standard specification for calcium silicate thermal insulation. Super Firetemp meets ASTM C656 Type II — the designation for higher-density calcium silicate boards used in structural and industrial applications. Engineers who specify calcium silicate insulation by ASTM standard can use Super Firetemp to meet Type II requirements. This is a key differentiator: Marinite referenced ASTM C177 (a thermal conductivity test method), while Super Firetemp carries full ASTM C656 Type II product compliance.

Super Firetemp Grade Overview

AWMCO stocks five Super Firetemp grades plus Super Caltemp Gold, covering the full density and temperature range of calcium silicate applications. All grades are Type II calcium silicate per ASTM C656

Super Firetemp — The In-Stock Marinite Replacement

BNZ Materials, the sole manufacturer of Marinite, has permanently closed its Marinite production facility. Marinite production has ended and will not resume. AWMCO holds some of the last remaining Marinite inventory — but when that stock is gone, Super Firetemp is the primary in-stock ongoing replacement for most Marinite grades.

Super Firetemp covers the same product category: non-asbestos, non-combustible, structural calcium silicate board for high-temperature industrial and fire protection applications. It is available with monthly restocking, making it a reliable long-term supply solution for buyers who previously depended on Marinite.

Super Firetemp Applications

Super Firetemp is used across industrial, commercial, and fire protection applications wherever non-combustible structural insulation is required at elevated temperatures. Common applications include:

•      Industrial furnace wall panels and backup insulation

•      Fire door cores and assemblies

•      Kiln furniture and sidewall lining

•      Oven housings and heat processing equipment

•      Welding and torch protection panels

•      Marine and shipboard fire insulation

•      Aerospace ground support heat shields

•      Petrochemical and refinery insulation panels

•      Structural thermal separation components

•      Electrical enclosures in high-temperature environments

Accessories and Adhesives

AWMCO stocks adhesives and coatings designed for use with Super Firetemp and other calcium silicate boards. These products extend the value of a Super Firetemp order and are required for many installation specifications.

Frequently asked questions about Super Firetemp

Is Super Firetemp a direct replacement for Marinite?

For most applications, yes. Super Firetemp and Marinite are both non-asbestos, non-combustible calcium silicate boards that are machinable and available in comparable sheet sizes. Super Firetemp covers the same density and temperature range as Marinite grades I, C, P, and A. The key differences are density (Super Firetemp grades are available from 20–55 pcf) and temperature ceiling (Super Firetemp is rated 1700–1800°F, exceeding Marinite’s 1200–1500°F ceilings depending on grade). For specification-critical applications, AWMCO recommends reviewing the grade-by-grade comparison pages or contacting our technical team.

What ASTM standard does Super Firetemp meet?

Super Firetemp meets ASTM C656 Type II — the standard specification for calcium silicate thermal insulation. This is the relevant compliance designation for engineers specifying calcium silicate insulation by ASTM standard in industrial or fire protection applications.

What is the maximum temperature for Super Firetemp?

Super Firetemp grades L and M are rated to 1800°F (982°C). Super Firetemp H, X, and S are rated to 1700°F (927°C). Super Caltemp Gold is rated to 1700°F. All grades exceed the temperature ceilings of the Marinite grades they replace.

What sizes does Super Firetemp come in?

Super Firetemp is available in 4’ × 4’ and 4’ × 8’ full sheets in thicknesses from 1/2” to 2”, and in pre-cut 12” × 12” squares across common grades and thicknesses. Custom cutting to other dimensions is available — contact AWMCO with your part specifications.

Does Super Firetemp contain asbestos?

No. Super Firetemp contains no asbestos, mercury, or lead. It is a calcium silicate board composed of calcium, silica, and reinforcing fibers. All grades are non asbestos and produce a clean, non contaminating surface.

How does Super Firetemp compare to Marinite I?

Super Firetemp X is AWMCO’s recommended replacement for Marinite I. Super Firetemp X is rated to 1700°F — 500°F higher than Marinite I’s 1200°F ceiling — and publishes bending strength of 1000 psi and compressive strength of 2000 psi at 10% deformation per ASTM methods. At 40 pcf, it is slightly less dense than Marinite I (46 pcf). For density-critical applications, Promat PROMATECT–MST at ~47 pcf is an alternative. See our full Marinite Replacement Guide.

How does Super Firetemp compare to Marinite P?

Super Firetemp S is AWMCO’s recommended replacement for Marinite P. Super Firetemp S is a 55 pcf board rated to 1700°F, closely matching Marinite P’s 60 pcf density and exceeding its 1200°F temperature ceiling. See our full Marinite Replacement Guide.

Is Super Firetemp in stock at AWMCO?

Yes. Super Firetemp L, M, X, and S are stocked and replenished monthly. Super Caltemp Gold and Super Firetemp H are available on a call-for-pricing basis. Contact AWMCO to confirm current availability and lead times for your grade and quantity.

Can AWMCO cut Super Firetemp to custom sizes?

Yes. AWMCO can cut Super Firetemp to custom dimensions. Full sheets are stocked in standard sizes; custom parts are cut to order. Contact AWMCO with your dimensions, thickness, and grade requirements.
